   Worm Bin "No Odor" Recipe
   Yard NOT required
THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ADD… EXPECT 9 TO 12 MONTHS BEFORE YOUR 1ST HARVEST

WORMS (red wigglers, NOT earth worms)
Best Choice – Adopt some from others that have active worm bins
Or buy them by searching online for local places selling “red wigglers”

GREENS (Nitrogen)
Cut items into smallest you have time to do
Any vegetable, plant (stem, skin, cut seed) EXCEPT onion + hot peppers (capsaicin)
All fruit (stem, skin, cut seed) EXCEPT citrus (orange, pineapple...)
Any kitchen nitrogen (used coffee grounds & food scraps)
DO NOT ADD any meat, dairy, oil, butter, vinegar, any sauces
***A dab of butter or oil drizzle on any veggie is OK
DO NOT ADD any yard scraps

BROWNS (Carbon)
Minimized, tear, shred up any starch (rice, dough, pasta)
Newspaper - Torn into small pieces (SD Union Tribune newspaper uses soy ink based)
Tear/shred any paper products including egg crates & brown paper
DO NOT ADD seeds or plastic
DO NOT ADD paper with ink, especially if you plan for edible garden

EGG SHELLS
Use rolling pin to crush up, sprinkle over bedding to enable worms to use like teeth.

STARTING NEW WORM BIN?
Amass enough Greens & Browns to start your bin at least 3’’ depth for the worms on first day
Expect first HARVEST based on pace, 9 to 12 months for an active worm bin

TOOLS
Worm Bin (ie, Wiggly Ranch in 2 foot space with at least 3 sides clear for air flow)
Hand Shovel
Cardboard Box (to HARVEST worm castings)
Container/Drawer space in refrigerator to hold premium food scraps assigned for worms
Indoor counter top pail w/ lid or bowl/bag to divert scraps

                 HOW TO __________________________________________________DIRECTIONS

ADD
ADD ingredients to your bin every 5, typically 7-14 days and up to 3 weeks, for active bin

1.Remove lid of bin only when adding ingredients.
*** Worms stop working for 24 hours when lid is opened, so keep it closed
2.Remove your damp cover newspaper or egg crate to reveal the feeding zone
3.ADD equal volume of Greens to Browns + water (not puddles but moisten browns) + airflow  = organic plant food
4.Replace cover newspaper/egg crate before closing lid.
5.Leave closed until next ADD or HARVEST

NEVER TURN worm bin bedding because the worms do all the TURN necessary.

HARVEST
Every quarterly - semi-annually after 1st HARVEST (9-12 months after starting worm bin)
Use cardboard to pile worm castings
Build/form mountains of castings during daylight, the worms dive down to escape light
Remove tops of casting mountains for use
Redo mountains and repeat until worms have no were to go
Sweep worms back into your worm bin
Use castings as you would fertilizer, water plants well after applying around roots
If worms make it to gardens, no worries

TIPS
1.The smaller the items you put in, the faster you will organically generate castings (plant food) and worm tea (1 part worm tea to 10 parts water) a natural insect repellent (does not kill insects, just wards them off)
2.Before ADD, consider what is in that items for edible or ornamental uses
3.Creepy crawlers (bugs) in your bin are part of the decomposition process, keep or evict
4.No matter how neglected the bin is, it’s nature and still working, just slower, so ADD Browns and start anew
5.Worms populate to the environment of your bin then stop growing, share worms with others and worms will re-populate accordingly
6.Storing Greens
Keep in back and bottom of refrigerator in draw or container
Can keep food scraps outside, though minimize it prior to storing outside
